An Update on Shark Tank’s SmartPlate

  • by

SmartPlate is just that: a “smart plate.” It’s a food weighing device designed to output nutritional info like calorie counts. Despite getting no deal from Shark Tank, business is still thriving. Find out what happened after the show below with this update.

5 Facts About SmartPlate

1) Even though the CEO is Anthony Ortiz, he was not the presenter on Shark Tank. The presenter was marketer Martin Dell’Arciprete. According to Philly Mag, Martin was let go from the company later on. But, Anthony told BizJournals that he thought Martin did a good job on the pitch, and disputed that the pitch had anything to do with Dell’Arciprete’s firing.

2) Anthony’s more comfortable in smaller group presentations, which is part of the reason why he did not participate in the Shark Tank pitch. But, his goal around the time of the show was to get the product on the market. At the time, it was only a prototype, which was one reason why the sharks couldn’t wrap their minds around the million-dollar valuation.

3) After closing deals with other investors, the company was off to a good start. They also had over $100,000 worth of pre-orders. After launching in 2017, their website totes them as the “#1 Food Tracker on the planet.” It’s fast, easy, and accurate to use. Reviews from sites like Brit + Co. and Forbes back up their credibility.

4) Along with their weighted plate, there’s an downloadable app for your device. The AI-powered app allows you easy access to the information you need, such as calorie counts. There are options of custom macros, weight management, and performance improvement.

5) Currently, there’s only the one plate, and the app you can get when you sign up for a membership. But, they seem to be selling well, and they’ve gotten 5-star reviews from customers.

Shark Tank season 13 premieres October 8 at 8 PM on ABC. In the meantime, watch other episodes on demand or on Hulu.
