Georgia Tech graduate Krystal Persaud took a chance and presented her portable USB device made with solar technology on ABC’s Shark Tank back in March. If you missed the episode, keep reading below for an update on GroupHug, the successful window panel solar charger.
1. GroupHug’s mission is to make solar technology more accessible. Krystal named it GroupHug because, as their mission statement says: “the world needs a group hug.”
2. According to their official website, the company uses creativity and design to produce effective and sleek solar panels. It’s portable, and it allows various pieces of technology such as smart phones to charge.
3. GroupHug originally started as an activist collective. They debuted their collection at NYC Design Week, and tied it to topics like education or nutrition. That was back in 2014, and now Krystal’s made her big-time debut on Shark Tank 6 years later!
4. In addition to founding GroupHug, Krystal was a founding member of littleBits, a STEM-infused product line for schools and homes. She also teaches at Parsons, and has spoken at events like MIT’s Sandbox Conference.
5. While they currently only have the solar panel charger, Krystal plans to expand in the future. Her presentation was certainly convincing, because Mark Cuban of ABC’s Shark Tank gave her the 150K for 25% of the business.
